Shaakunthala runs F10

Finally, a big change. For about four years I was using Ubuntu as my default operating system. Now it's going to be changed. (May be not!)

Recently, one of my friends adviced me not to use Ubuntu due to it's security vulnurabilities. Furthermore, he said, "dont play with ez stuff if u wnt 2 lrn". After some arguements with him, I decided to try Fedora 10.

Ubuntu is the best choice if you are a Linux beginner. Ubuntu has lot of things automated. Lot of things automated means lot of security risk. For example, after installing Ubuntu, you can run sudo without any problem. But with Fedora, you can't run sudo until you run visudo in root.

As a beginner, I learnt lot of things using Ubuntu. I owe Ubuntu for that. Ubuntu is always free, and it was also free of charge for me all the past time. Now, it's the time to go for intermediate!

Fedora doesn't offer CDs/ DVDs free of charge. We have to download the disc images and burn them ourselves. However, I got a CD now!

Fedora Live CD works fine with my computer. Interface looks better than Ubuntu in some means. But interface is not the most important thing. It runs a littlebit slow because of it runs live version. I still didn't install Fedora 10. I'm going to wait for some time until I get the DVD image with full of the features.

I'm not going to wipe Ubuntu out and install Fedora all of a sudden. I'll be using Windows, Fedora and Ubuntu all three in one for some time, and then choose what to exist in my machine by usage experience. Switching to a different OS can not ne done all of a sudden. To get familiar with the new OS, you have to test it for some time to see whether it meets your requirements. Nowadays what I'm doing is switching from Windows to Linux. In my point of view switching from Windows to Linux is not an easy task because the most of the rest of the World is using Windows. But most of the time it is easier to switch from one Linux distro to another.

Another important thing I'm going to say is that Security and Ease lie on the either dishes of a balance. If you want more security, then it is less ease. If you want more easy stuff, then it is less secure. For example, in Ubuntu, you can enable automatic logon. It is easy, but insecure.

However, that's all for today. Thanks for reading.

Fedora 10

I suggest you to try new OS's using
hardware virtualation tools. Rather than burning directly to a CD or installing
it.I think Sun's virtualbox tool or VM ware are some handy tools(not Microsoft Vitualation
tool , which is not effective in resource management).  Since Sun's virtualbox tool is free I would recommend
it. Anyway it’s up to the user to decide which one to use. If I am not mistaken Fedora
also offers automatic logon feature (I can’t remember exactly)

Yes

Yes, you are correct. But we cannot experience the full speed and facilities of an OS with virtualization. This time, my choice is going to be permanent. So, no to virtualization.
